The Secrets of Proper Posture

by C S

My dad was a US Marine; I guess that might be part of thereason why he regularly reminded me to stand up straight. In fact, when I told him I actually preferred to slouch alittle, he informed me that I looked unprofessional andlazy. He was, and is, still right, but he forgot to mentionone thing. Maintaining proper posture not only makes uslook good, but it also assists with our body's functionalprocesses. Standing erect allows the body to operate moreeffectively, like a complex machine. By holding the body inthe correct alignment, we can more efficiently carry outour daily tasks because proper posture assists in effectivefunctioning of vital organs. There are a few simpleposture-fixing tricks that if applied in your life can helpyou change any poor, slouching habits you may currentlyhave. These quick fixes are a great way to remedy yourposture when you are sitting, walking or standing.

When you are sitting in a meeting, in the car, or at atable or desk, pretend you are on a plane in take-off mode. That will get you sitting up straight. We all know what itfeels like to have the flight attendant politely remind usto take our chairs out of the recline mode and sit upstraight while the plane lifts off. Who knew that extraquarter-inch you were reclined could impact the ability ofthe commercial aircraft to take-off? Regardless of howcomfortable plane seats are, sitting upright will help ournervous systems and spine in their functioning and we willbe able to better focus. The next time you find yourself ina boring class or meeting, make a mental note to sit upstraight and you will find it within you to stay morealert. It is actually pretty amazing how much moreefficient you feel when you sit up straight.

Walk with pride when you stroll to and from places. I wasin a fashion show when I was 14 years old and I will neverforget how the professional models taught me to walk."Pretend a rope is tied around your hips and you are beingpulled from the center, a few inches below the bellybutton," they said. Give it a try, next time you arewalking, let your hips lead your body. Your shoulder bladeswill naturally go up-and-back, your eyes will be lookingstraight ahead, and you definitely cannot slouch forwardwhen you walk this way. Walking with proper posture looksfabulous and is a great way to burn a few extra calories aswell as increase your walking speed.

When simply standing, there are a few different standardsthat should be used to evaluate proper posture. When youlook at yourself in the mirror, make sure your shouldersand hips are level, parallel to the ground. The head shouldbe right between the shoulders. The arms need to hang in acomfortable position, sort of relaxed, with the firstfinger and thumb pointing forward. The knees will pointforward and the feet should have a slight turn to theoutsides. Turn sideways and look at your profile; youshould be able to imagine a straight line from the ceilingto the floor that would go straight through your ear, themiddle of the shoulder, center of the hip, barely behindthe center of the knee and finally down to the ankle bone.

So whether it is at work, school, on a casual walk, or juststanding around, making minor adjustments to your posturecan take only a few seconds. The majority of these fewmoments are taken by the mental decision to actually fix apoor habit. Becoming aware of poor posture is half thebattle of fixing it; so once you realize you need to adjustyour posture, increase your professional image, assist yourbody in its functionality and burn a few extra calories, beproud of this acknowledgement and then, "Stand up straight!"
