Design Dilemma: Dealing with Dark Blue Walls in a Bedroom

by Emily Mason

When you chose dark blue paint for your bedroom walls, you probably were imagining a chic sophisticated space. Unfortunately, now that it is all over the walls, the room seems oppressively dark and you may feel like you are suffering from a bad case of claustrophobia. Chances are, you would rather not paint again, so, what are your options?

Choose a Simple Color PaletteThe good news is that you can balance the dark blue by building a color palette of no more than five colors. Since blue is a cool color, using a pale color in your color board will add striking contrast and a sharp crisp finish to the room: Shades of pure white, cream, very pale yellow or barely pearl gray will offer the opposing color tension required for balance. You might also consider adding a lighter pale shade of blue to the mix to create a layered tone-on-tone effect that will add gradations of sophistication.

Shades of violet, robins egg blue or starlight blue may be considered depending on whether your particular shade of dark blue has red or yellow undertones. Paint a few sample colors on poster board and tack them on the wall with painters tape to make an informed decision. Your choices in wood tones and metallic finishes of furniture and fixtures also count toward your color board choices. Shiny glossy finishes will add sparkle to the room; look toward woods like maple or dark tropical Wenge wood. Lamps and fixtures in brushed nickel, classic pewter or silver will add luxury and brightness, as will pearlescent and glass embellishments.

The color of the wood trim in the room can also make a tremendous difference in appearance and atmosphere. Clean white trim around windows and doors and for the doors themselves will create rich definition that makes the dark blue walls recede.

The Light FantasticRemember that dark surfaces absorb more light than they reflect, so it is important to carefully plan your lighting design. Counteract the bluish tint of the walls with flattering soft white or pink light bulbs in table lamps and floor lamps. Overhead lighting is necessary for general tasks and you should consider adding directional pin lights to highlight artwork or sculptures, architectural features or your gorgeous headboard. Do not forget to add scented candles, candle holders and wall sconces to create romantic ambiance that will make your dark blue room feel invitingly intimate.

It will also help to keep window treatments light and airy so that natural light can freely travel through the room during daylight hours. A beautiful choice is white or off-white plantation shutters framed with curtain panels that coordinate and accent other fabrics in the room. The shutters can be tilted to admit sunlight and closed for privacy after dark.

The creamy white finish of the shutters will add luscious depth and classic purity to the space. Then add a few strategically placed mirrors to capture and reflect light and add spaciousness. Finally, crystal beading on sumptuous throw pillows, curtain fabrics, lamp shades and accessories will add a glimmering sheen that will make a dark blue room sparkle like a velvet jewelry box surrounding an impeccably cut diamond.
